The Work You Will Always Have With You
A few years ago, I was considering buying a rental property. It was a bigger investment than I had ever considered before. It occurred to me that while this path would be profitable, it would not be easy.
Speaking with an experienced investor, I asked him when it gets easier. When does the dough start rolling in and things get easy?
You can probably guess what he said.
“The work doesn’t go away. It just gets harder.”
More money doesn’t mean less responsibility. It means more. More responsibility, more burden, more work.
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.”
Delegation
Even if you hire someone to manage your investment, you manage the manager. And if you don’t, you will pay for it.
Aiming Big
Be the sort of person who aims big. And if you aim big, you may well be the sort of person who, stick with me here, aims big.
By the time you have enough to say to your soul, “eat, drink, and be merry,” and tear down your barns to build some bigger barns, you have hopefully become the sort of person who doesn’t want to.
The reason you achieved something is because you worked hard, and God blessed the work. You are the sort of person who achieves things. And the truth is, you want to achieve more.
Making the World Better
Say your investments succeed. You could stop working and retire by 35.
But you know there are ways to improve the investments.
You can make your software better, and delight your users even more.
You can make your rental properties better, and delight your tenants even more.
You can make the business more beautiful, more efficient, more delightful.
You can make the world better—also known as “taking dominion.”
The Work Stays
That’s the lesson: there’s no point where it all runs itself and you sit back. The stakes rise. The weight increases. You get better—and the work stays.
Were you faithful with your talent? Here’s a city. Now, are you going to double down, or kick back and phone it in?
